Miroslav Klose praises Gerd Muller
News Date: 9th September 2013    View Comments: (0)

Lazio forward Miroslav Klose has joined Germany legend Gerd Muller as the country’s all-time top goalscorer, notching his 68th goal in the World Cup qualifying win against Austria on Friday. Klose, 35, had suffered a recent international goal drought, having not scored since the 4-4 draw with Sweden last October.

But he opened the scoring against Austria to equal Muller’s record and said: “I took my time to reach this goal. I am delighted now.”

He added that he would never compare himself to the legendary striker, saying: “I could never mention myself in the same breath as Gerd Muller.”

While Klose needed 129 appearances to reach his total, Muller, now 67, scored his 68 goals in only 62 games during the 1970s.

Muller was there to see Klose equal his landmark at Bayern’s Allianz Arena and told SID he was not surprised. “It was only a question of time,” he added. “I am absolutely delighted for him.”

Klose can now set his sights on three records: becoming the all-time record scorer, joining Brazil’s Ronaldo at the top of the all-time World Cup top scorers’ list -- he needs one more goal -- and surpassing Lothar Matthaus’ record of playing in 25 World Cup matches.
