Mexican nationals sent home less than 1.5 billion U.S. dollars in November 2009, down 14 percent from the same month in 2008, said the Bank of Mexico on Monday.
Remittances had been falling year on year for 13 months in a row, mainly due to an economic downturn in the United States, home to around 10
percent of Mexican nationals, said the bank.
Money sent back to Mexico had also been declining month on month since July.
The construction sector in the United States, the largest employer of overseas Mexicans, was hardest hit by the financial crisis, taking its toll on remittances to Mexico.
Remittances from abroad are Mexico's second largest foreign income earner.
