According to him, the private sector had been identified as a key stakeholder in the economic development of the country and a major contributor to national income, job creation and major contributor to tax revenues.

Mr Darfour made the remarks at the formal opening of the new Koforidua Melcom and Koforidua Community Centre building at Koforidua. The Managing Director, Melcom Group of Companies, Mr Ramesh Sadhwani said Melcom was in Koforidua to support the efforts of government by creating additional job opportunities for the youth of Koforidua and its surrounding communities.

He said the Melcom Care Foundation, which is a subsidiary of the company, was instituted to identify needy areas in education and health for support.

The Director of Communication of Melcom Group of Companies, Mr Godwin Avenorgbo said the first Melcom shop was opened in Accra in 1989, whiles the first in Koforidua was opened in 2006 and a new shop was added in 2009.

He said many people know Melcom as a supermarket but Melcom Limited was only one of the subsidiaries belonging to the Melcom Group of Companies, which comprised of Melcom Travel and Tours, Crown Star Electronics Industry Ltd, Century, a plastic manufacturing industry and the newly added Melcom Hospitality.

The Krontihene of the New Juaben Traditional Area, Baffour Nyantakyi Tutu Boateng pledged the support of the chiefs and people of the traditional area to support the work of the company in Koforidua.

As part of the corporate social responsibility ,the MelcomCare Foundation handed over a  new Community Centre to the people of Koforidua, donated 10 sewing machines to needy skilled women and 30 tables and chairs to the Presbyterian JHS ‘C’ in Koforidua.
