MTN Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to digital inclusion and female empowerment through its continued investment in the Girls in ICT initiative. The company has been sponsoring the program for the past nine years, with a focus on encouraging girls to take an interest in science and STEM activities.
Stephen Blewett, CEO of MTN Ghana, emphasized the company's commitment to diversity and inclusion, saying that the next big idea or innovation should come from Africa. He noted that MTN Ghana had set a target to have 50% women in its business and pay parity. He said that the company believed in providing equal opportunities for everyone, especially young girls. "The next MTN Ghana CEO can come from one of you," he said, encouraging the girls to be fearless and keep experimenting.
Georgina Asare Fiagbenu, Head of Corporate Communications at MTN Ghana, noted that the company's sponsorship covered the cost of the project, traveling, hosting, and providing laptops and ICT equipment for the girls. She added that the program had impacted about 13,000 girls across the country since its inception.
The event brought together 100 girls from the Greater Accra and Ashanti regions, who spent a week learning about various aspects of ICT and interacting with women in technology.
During the program, the girls had the opportunity to engage in break-out sessions with MTN's Women in Technology, where they discussed their careers and shared their experiences. The sessions provided the girls with valuable insights and mentorship opportunities, allowing them to learn from women who have succeeded in the tech industry.
The Girls in ICT initiative is part of MTN Ghana's broader sustainability project, and demonstrates the company's commitment to empowering the next generation of female digital leaders. Through its support for the program, MTN Ghana is helping to bridge the digital divide and promote STEM education among girls in Ghana.
Since 2021, MTN Ghana has invested GHS 17.6 million in the Girls in ICT program, and the company remains committed to supporting the initiative in the years to come.
