President John Dramani Mahama on Thursday tasked the Minister of Roads and Highways to ensure the speedy construction of the eastern corridor road, which on completion would effectively link the southern sector of the country to the north.
He said although, the tarring had not commenced, the road was now motorable than before and hoped that its completion would also provide job opportunities to people in communities along the road from the Eastern, through the Volta Region to the Northern Region.
President Mahama issued out this order when he inspected the Nkwanta-Oti-Damanko portion of the road as part of his two-day tour of the northern Volta region.
During his two-day tour of the area, President Mahama addressed rallies, inspected and inaugurated development projects and interacted with chiefs and party members in all the communities that he visited.
The 50-Kilometre Nkwanta-Oti- Damanko road was awarded on contract in September , 2011and commenced in December the same year and expected to be completed within 24 months.
The GHC 113.4 million road project which is being constructed by China Jianngxi Corporation, would provide a straightforward route from Accra, through the eastern and Volta Regions to Nakpanduri in the Northern Region.
President Mahama lamented that the New Patriotic Party administration did nothing to improve on the roads in their eight-year reign and promised that the NDC government would fulfill all its promises in the coming years.
"We know that you the people of the Volta Region have over the years voted for us, and we shall not take your votes for granted, but to provide you with your share of the national cake." He added.
Responding to the challenge, Mr Joe Gidisu, Minister of Roads and Highways, gave the assurance that the road would be completed on schedule to make the people along the corridor and commuters to become comfortable in the coming years.
He said government would make alternative roads that would not disturb travelers during the construction of the road.
Mr Gidisu promised that government would also work on all road projects throughout the country to make road transport a better alternative to travelers.
