Madam Aisha Ibrahim, National President of Ghana Blind Union, has said Persons with Disability should be given the opportunity to vote independently in the December 7 elections.
She said they should also be allowed to cast their votes without having to queue for long hours as had always been the case in the past. She said the Union’s concern has been that the blind was already in a disadvantaged position and should there be any riots or confusion at the polling station, he or she could easily be affected.
Madam Ibrahim said this in a speech read on her behalf at World Disability Day celebration at Bole in the Northern Region.“In the likelihood of any trouble we are expected to bear the brunt of it more than any other person, hence the need to accord us the opportunity to cast our vote on time and get back home at a good time to secure ourselves from trouble” she said.
Madam Ibrahim said there is the need for changes in the structural designs in the society so that Persons with Disability are not excluded or marginalised in public places like schools and hospitals. The President of the Union said Persons with Disability have not be recognised in the decision-making process and called on the authorities to include such individuals in all aspects of the societal development process.
