The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Gomoa West, Mr Theophilus Aidoo-Mensah has appealed to fishermen to insure their businesses against disasters.
"Chief fishermen and award winners at the National Farmers and Fishermen Day celebrations must encourage their members to insure their businesses against disasters," Mr Aidoo-Mensah stressed when he inspected three fishing vessels which were destroyed by a windstorm last Tuesday at Mumford.
The three fishing vessels, each costing over 15,000 Ghana cedis which were anchored on the sea shore, got their anchors broken and hit against the rocks during the storm and got completely destroyed with their engines missing.
Mr Aidoo-Mensah appealed to the contractors whom landing beach contracts had been awarded to, to resolve any impediments which were delaying the start of the project to enable them to move to site.
Mumford is one of the 11 coastal communities which are to benefit from the landing beach project from the three-billion-dollar loan secured by the government from China.
The DCE said during briefing by the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority at Mumford sometime last year on the landing beach project, the contractors promised to move to site by October, 2012.
Mr Aidoo-Mensah said he had instructed the District Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to compile a report on the disaster for him for onward presentation to the authorities for further action.
Fishermen from Mumford, who own about 200 vessels, do not often stay in the town due to the rocky nature of their beach which sometimes destroys their vessels whenever there is a storm.
