Members of Projects Abroad Ghana Office (POHA) on Thursday called on management of AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) to relocate residents living in villages around Obuasi, rendered uninhabitable by its mining activities.
They also recommended adequate compensation for the affected people and called on management of AGA to cooperate with an independent body
investigating into any human rights abuses in the area.
The call was made in a report by POHA after a fact finding mission group had visited Anwiam on March 24, this year.
The report discussed by participants at a consultative meeting in Accra, said that areas of concern to POHA included access road, damage to
property, flooding, water pollution and health care in addition to addressing human rights violations in the area.
POHA, member of coalition working in communities affected by mining activities, was established to create awareness on human rights, monitoring of vulnerable areas and resolving abuses.
Mr Tom Davis, Country Director of POHA, said since June 2009, POHA had been working with four communities; Anwiem, Jimiso, Akatayeso, and Anyiman
in Ashanti region.
He said POHA identified several human rights abuses that required redress.
Mr Davis said despite publication of the report about two years ago issues affecting human rights abuse and living standards of the people
existed.
