The Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa district has put in place an 8-member Road Safety Task Force, to among others, enforce traffic regulations, to reduce lorry accidents and to protect lives and property in the district.
The committee headed by the District Police Commander, include representatives from the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of the Trades Union Congress, (TUC), Progressive Transport Owners Association (PROTOA) and the District Assembly.
Mrs Georgina Nkrumah Aboah, District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area, made this known when she addressed members of the Breman Asikuma Traditional Council on the progress, achievements and the state of development in the district, since she took office.
She said many drivers failed to book at the lorry station but rather pick passengers by the road side, thus dodging payment of tolls and levies, which affects the Assembly's revenue.
According to the DCE the task force would also ensure that drivers who commit traffic offences are prosecuted, to serve as a deterrent to others.
The Police Commander Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mr Owusu Bempah mentioned some of the traffic offences committed by drivers as, failing to stop upon police request, overloading, over speeding, driving without licence and insurance cover.
