A total of 136 motor accident cases involving 213 vehicles, were recorded by the Tema Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service in the fist quarter of the year.
The accidents claimed the lives of 17 persons and left 127 injured.
Chief Inspector Olivia Turkson, Tema Police Public Affairs Officer revealed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on Tuesday.
She said most of the accidents were recorded on the Tema Motor Way, Tema Township, especially on the
Harbour Road and the Tema-Aflao Road.
Most of the accidents, she said, occurred as a result of drunk driving, over speeding, as well as the handling of vehicles by inexperienced driver mates and spare drivers.
Chief Inspector Turkson said 12 of the cases were fatal, 20 serious and 72 minor.
She said the MTTU also recorded a total of 41 motor traffic offences during the first quarter of the year.
Chief Inspector Turkson said out of the 41 offenders, 33 were sent to court while 29 of them were convicted.
She said a total fine of GH¢16,940 was imposed on the offenders by the courts.
