Sony Entertainment Television shows the A-listers
This month on DStv
DStv invites audiences to tune into Sony Entertainment Television this month as one of the best actor / director personalities, Tom Hanks puts both hats on for the six-time Oscar winning movie SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. The movie will be screened on DStv channel 113 on July 18 at 20:30 CAT.
Thomas Jeffrey Hanks is an American actor, producer, writer and director who was born in July 1956. He worked in television and family friendly movies before his rise to fame as a dramatic actor.
Some of his best works include the role of Andrew Beckett in Philadelphia, Chuck Noland in Cast Away and the lead character in Forrest Gump. He won consecutive Best Actor Academy Awards in 1993 and 1994 for Philadelphia and Forrest Gump.
Hanks was born in California and packed his bags at age 23 for New York in 1979. His first movie as well as television roles were in the thriller He Knows You're Alone and Mazes and Monsters. He did his first and only stage production to date, in Niccolo Machiavelli's The Mandrake, which was
directed by Daniel Southern.
The production helped him land an agent, Joe Ohla with the J. Michael Blom agency.
After joining the agency, Hanks got a role in Bosom Buddies and landed a guest appearance in Happy Days. The appearances proved lucky for him
because he was contacted by director Ron Howard, who was at the time working on Splash.
The romantic comedy was about a mermaid who falls in love with a human. At first Howard wanted Hanks for the role of the main character's
wisecracking brother, the role eventually went to John Candy, while Hanks landed the lead.
In 1996 Hanks tried his hand at directing in the film That Thing You Do about a 1960's pop group; he also played the role of the music producer in
the film. He also executive produced, co-wrote and co-directed the HBO docudrama From Earth to the Moon, a 12-part series which chronicles the
space program from its inception, through the flights of Neil Armstrong and Jim Lovell, to the personal feelings surrounding the reality of moon
landings. The project won an Emmy Award and was one of the most expensive ventures ever made for television. But his next project was no cheaper.
He teamed up with Steven Spielberg to make SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, a film about the D-Day landing at Ohama Beach and the quest through war-torn France to bring back a soldier who has a ticket home. It earned praise and respect from the film community and general public and was named one of the finest war film ever made. The film also earned Spielberg his second Academy Award for direction and Hanks a Best Actor nomination.
The movie on July 18 at 20:30 CAT stars Matt Damon, Edward Burns, Giovanni Ribisi, Vin Diesel and is set during the Normandy invasion of 1944.
Captain John Miller (Hanks) must take his men behind enemy lines to findPrivate James Ryan (Damon), whose three brothers have been killed in
combat. Faced with impossible odds and surrounded by the brutal realities of war, each man searches for the courage to triumph over an uncertain
future. The film won six Academy Awards.
Oscar winner Forest Whitaker returns in the role of Jon Kavanaugh in season six of the powerful drama series The Shield which sees a devastated
Vic (Michael Chiklis) resolved to track down Lem's killer while also attempting to salvage his own career. Set in the tough, morally ambiguous
surroundings of an inner-city Los Angeles police precinct, this critically acclaimed series breaks the conventions of the cop genre, exposing a world
in which the line between good and evil is crossed daily.
His portrayal of Detective Vic Mackey, an effective but maverick cop who leads the elite Strike Team, has won Chiklis both Emmy and Golden Globe Awards.
Viewers can also tune into DStv channel 113 for the daily talk show The Late Show with David Letterman from Mondays to Fridays at 23:15 CAT.
