Two students on Friday appeared before the Asamankese Circuit Court charged with assaulting a policeman and damaging his uniform.
Godwin Awuni and Edward Awuni, both brothers, pleaded not guilty to the charge of assaulting General Lance Corporal Everistus Soglo and causing
unlawful damage to his uniform.
Police Inspector D.T. Nartey prosecuting told the court presided over by Mr Emmanuel Siameh that on June 27 at about 2000 hours, while the policeman was on duty at the Kwaebibirem Rural Bank at Boadua, he overheard someone screaming for help.
He said the policeman therefore rushed to the scene and found the two brothers assaulting Samuel Nuhu, a taxi driver.
The policeman managed to rescue the driver and attempted to arrest Godwin, but he fiercely resisted. Godwin was joined by Edward and they both fought the policeman.
The prosecutor said the accused persons knocked down the policeman and reduced him to a punching bag.
The policeman had to shout for help, which caught the attention of other people who came and rescued him. The sympathizers also helped to
arrest the brothers who were taken to the police station.
In a caution statement to the police, they denied knowledge of the offence.
Counsel for the accused persons, Mr. K. O. Ansah, described the facts given by the police as totally false, concocted and fabricated.
He said any reasonable person would find it difficult to believe the story of the prosecution.
Mr Ansah explained that on the day of the incident, the two brothers board a taxi and suspected that the vehicle was not road worthy.
He said the two brothers decided to check the papers on the vehicle, especially as to its road worthy.
Mr Ansah said brothers action angered the driver and he beat the accused persons severely with Godwin shouting for help.
He said the police, a friend of the driver, got to the scene and the driver and others descended heavily on the accused persons.
Mr Ansah prayed the court to grant the two brothers, who are students, bail to enable them to continue their studies.
The judge granted them GH1,000 bail with one surety each to reappear on August 18.
