The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has asked local assemblies to take up the challenge to provide teachers' accommodation in the rural communities to attract and retain qualified teachers.
He said most teachers refuse postings to rural areas because of lack of accommodation.
Mrs Helena Awurusa, National Gender Co-ordinator, GNAT, asked why school projects would be sited without the provision of accommodation for teachers.
Mrs Awurusa was presenting three bundles of iron sheets and 20 bags of cement, valued at GHC 1,360 on behalf of GNAT, to the management of the Akwamu Kotoku D/A Primary School in the Fanteakwa District, on Friday, towards the rehabilitation of the school.
She also donated a quantity of assorted clothing to pupils of the school.
Mrs Awurusa said the association was determined to ensure that every child of school going age had access to quality basic education.
Mr Nathaniel Lawer Apronti, Eastern Regional GNAT Secretary, appealed to parents to take good care of their daughters to prevent unscrupulous men from taking advantage of them.
He also urged them to provide their wards with the necessary learning aids to enhance their studies instead of spending their resources on expensive funeral clothes.
Mr Apronti said the Regional GNAT Secretariat planned to provide the people with building materials towards the construction of teachers' bungalows in the town and appealed to the chiefs to make lands readily available for the project.
Nana Addo Gyau Akabisa, Regional Chairman of GNAT, said the association aims at bridging the gap between urban and rural schools for children in deprived communities to get quality education.
He commended teachers in rural communities on the sacrifices they were making and urged them to keep up the spirit.
Nana Gyau Akabisa charged the pupils to be disciplined and to take their lessons seriously to be able to climb the education ladder.
Nene Nartey Andrews Agmortey, chief of the town, on behalf of his people and the school authorities, expressed his gratitude to GNAT for the gesture.
