Mr. Ebo Barton Oduro, the Member of Parliament for Cape Coast, on Monday, opened a two-day workshop for Physics teachers at the Science Resource Centre he recently established and equipped in Cape Coast.
The workshop being organized by the United Kingdom Institute of Physics (IOP) on the theme: “Enhancing learning of physics towards
professional development of the physics teacher” was being attended by 41 physics teachers from the Cape Coast Metropolis, the Mfantsiman
Municipality and Sekondi-Takoradi in the Western Region.
Mr. Barton Oduro said that emerging trends in the study of science and technology require that teachers acquire modern methods of teaching these subjects and also share knowledge to whip up the interest of students in the study of science-based subjects.
He noted that science and technology could facilitate national development.
Mr Oduro said the resource Centre was established to help raise educational standards, particularly, in the sciences in the Metropolis.
He appealed to teachers to make the study of physics more relevant by applying simple everyday issues that happen around children for them to “unearth the physics in them”.
Mr Oduro observed that with the development of the right attitude, knowledge and skills, the youth could take advantage of opportunities being offered by the country to study science to build
their careers.
Mr Roger Green, representative of the IOP, said the Institute was in the country to help teachers to acquire skills to make the teaching
and study of physics attractive and simplified and to involve more practical and experiment teaching modules.
Mrs. Georgina Quaisie, Head of Science Education Unit of Ghana Education Service (GES), advised teachers to avail themselves of the
opportunity being offered them to acquire more knowledge in science to facilitate the teaching and learning of that area of study.
Mr. Anthony Egyir Aikins, Chief Executive of the Cape Coast Metropolis, noted that science and technology could accelerate the growth of a nation and called for strategies to motivate the youth to study science subjects to the highest level.
Nana Kwamina Nyimfa IX, Adontenhen of Cape Coast, asked teachers to encourage students, particularly girls, to study science and
technology.
The chief, who is also chairman of the Science Resource Centre Governing Council, stressed the need for students to be given the
encouragement to study science at an early age.
