Government has been asked to facilitate the writing of a covering letter so that the Tengzuk Hills in Upper East could be placed on the World Heritage Tourist site.
The appeal was made by Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB) and United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
Mr George Apolala, Administrator of GMMB, Ms Lydia Asala, Assistant Programme Specialist on Culture, UNESCO, made the request during a sensitization programme, organized on Friday at Tongo, aimed at sensitizing the communities on the need to preserve and conserve their cultural heritage.
Mr Apolala expressed worry that among the tourist sites in the Region, which included the Paga Crocodile Pond, the Slave Camp and the Serigu Pottery, it was only the Tengzuk Hill that was selected by the World Heritage of UNESCO.
He said a dossier was prepared and accepted since 2009 by World Heritage site of the UNESCO but the covering letter from the Government was yet to be written.
“At this stage what is needed is just for the President or his Vice President to write a covering letter and append his signature on it to enable Tengzuk Hills to be placed on the World Heritage site. The paramount Chief of Tongo Traditional Area, Naba Sabulg –Nemalteng, the Talensi Nabdam District Chief Executive, Mrs Vivian Anafo, the Board Chairman of GMMB among others have written acceptance letters”, Mr Apolala said.
Ms Asala indicated that World Heritage site of UNESCO considers importance to the maintenance of the cultural landscape of an area as criteria for selection of an area to be put on the world Heritage Sites.
She entreated the community members to preserve and conserve their cultural landscape, saying it was one of the means of preserving and conserving biodiversity.
Ms Asala said that if the area is finally selected the people would benefit from the heritage fund and rapid response fund.
The people asked Government to fast track the writing of the covering letter, so that the area could be placed on the World Heritage site to help open a lot of employment avenues.
The District Chief Executive, Mrs Vivian Anafo, said the tourist site was dear to the Assembly, and has reconstructed the road leading to some tourist sites.
She said the Assembly was also liaising with a lot of local hoteliers to establish accommodation for tourist who would be touring the place.
