Deputy Chief Fire Officer (DCFO), Daniella Mawusi Sarpong, in charge of the Volta Region has given a 21-day ultimatum to secondary and tertiary schools in the Region to acquire first aid fire fighting equipment.
The schools are also to install early warning detection systems at vantage points such as dormitories, assembly and dining halls within the period. The ultimatum follows fire incidences at the Leklebi Senior High School and the Akatsi Teachers Training College in less than three months.
Hotels and hostels in the Ho Municipality are also expected to acquire fire certification to avoid closure. The two fire disasters damaged school properties estimated at thousands of cedis. DCFO Sarpong said those properties could had been salvaged if the schools had gotten the equipment.
She said it was unfortunate that despite regular fire education by the Service, it was not recording the corresponding positive change in attitude and said after three weeks, it would start enforcing the laws.
DCFO Sarpong said though fire incidences had gone down in the Region, the Service was focused on bringing the cases to a minimal level.
