The Union, some few weeks back urged President Akufo-Addo’s government to vigorously pursue the modification of the Millennium Challenge Second Compact because its implementation without modification could be detrimental to the interest of the nation.

          Mr Michael Adumatta Nyantakyi, General Secretary of PUWU gave the commendation in reaction to the President’s State of the Nation Address to Parliament on Tuesday.

          Speaking to the Ghana News Agency, he said a dialogue on the key issues among stakeholders was in the right direction as that would bring to the fore the issues and activities to be considered before its implementation.

          He agreed with the President that the dialogue must be done urgently, dispassionately, and transparently among labour, Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Millennium Development Authority (MiDA) to ensure that all concerns were adequately addressed.

          The PUWU General Secretary cautioned against stakeholders taking entrenched position during discussion, but rather put the interest of the nation first.

          He said government must not shy away from modifying the Compact as according to him “there is no agreement that cannot be modified therefore we must not allow ourselves to be pushed into signing an agreement by our donors”.

          Touching on the President’s announcement to review all the 43 Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) and the 23 which are yet to be operationalized, he said, a review would give customers a relief from high tariffs.

          Mr Nyatakyi said there should be room for the downward review of the power being purchased from those agreements explaining that they contributed significantly to the high tariffs being paid by clients.

          He however urged the government to look at those agreements in a holistic perspective in order not to rush into hasty decisions.
