Residents and drivers of New Takoradi community, a suburb of Takoradi on Wednesday demonstrated and burnt lorry tyres on both ends of the road linking the Metropolis to the industrial of the community.
The demonstration was in demand for the rehabilitation of the less than two-kilometre road that had been in deplorable state over the years. It is the main route for heavy duty vehicles which ply the Port of Takoradi either to offload or load goods to the city centre and other parts of the region and country at large.
According to some residents and demonstrators who spoke to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), the road had been in the same bad condition for more than six years now. They said the only health facility in the area had to be closed down due to the incessant dust, resulting into lots of respiratory conditions and other health challenges.
"This is our fourth demonstration to demand Justice for our road, but all to no avail...we want the city authorities to fix the road...now the hospital has been closed down...we demand that our road is fixed. We will not listen to anybody", Mr Bernand Aboti a resident and a driver told the GNA
Madam Monica Gyasi expressed disappointment that school children within the community were often covered with dust to and from school on account of the bad nature of the road. She added that some pregnant women also had miscarriages due to the bad nature of the road adding, ‘captain Cudjoe wanted to fix the road, but the port authorities said they would do it but have failed us over the years.’
The young and energetic men and women w2ho participated in the demonstration chanted war songs and challenged police officers who had gathered in their numbers to control the situation.
They among other issues said, " we are ready to die for new Takoradi to get a better road network, city authorities have failed us for long, we need our road intact...you can't ply the road with these heavy duty vehicles and we sit unconcerned ".
Mr Samuel Amissah, the Assembly member for the area said over the six-year period nothing seemed to have happened on the road, in terms of rehabilitation adding, " GHAPOHA is not doing their social asset duties as is expected of them".
According to him, the road leading to new Takoradi and Paose area was actually in a bad state, "the usual morning sea water spraying is not doing anything good but rather spoiling people's vehicles."
Mr Amissah said institutional failure to repair the road over the years had necessitated the demonstration, "I recently went to GHAPOHA to complain and ask for repairs but nothing had been done, people are getting asthma, miscarriages among others...we are suffering".
Chief Superintendent of Police, Samuel Owusu-Berko in charge of Railway and Ports under the Marine Police Directorate told the GNA at the scene that fire personnel were ready to quench the blazing fire and pave way for levelling of the road.
He mentioned that despite the chanting and hooliganism, nothing untoward had happened as the directorate was engaging the leadership of the demonstrators to halt the act and find lasting solutions to the road problem.
Meanwhile, information gathered revealed that the Director of Port in Takoradi Captain Ebenezer Afedzi as a first step mobilised equipment and engineers to the site to bring some hope and assurance to the new Takoradi community.
