The breast cancer education seminar, which was held in the school by Breast Care International (BCI), the main anti-breast cancer campaigner, was part of efforts to build the capacity of girls to be alert against the disease.

As part of the event, a free counseling and breast cancer screening exercise was undertaken in the school.

Also attended by a section of past students, the health seminar was part of activities to mark the 19^th anniversary celebration of Krobo Girls SHS.

Dr. Beatrice Wiafe Addai, President of BCI, addressing the students and teachers, said early detection and treatment remained the only best way to deal with the disease which has no cure.

And the only way to ensure early detection was to increase awareness about the disease, adding that BCI had embarked on a nationwide campaign in schools to build a critical mass of highly informed young people against the disease.

According to the BCI president, since young people, particularly students are “enterprising, they could be supported to act as agents in their homes and communities in fighting against breast cancer”.

Dr. Wiafe-Addai, who is also Chief Executive of Peace and Love Hospitals, expressed confidence of securing a breast cancer free generation if the breast cancer campaign was sustained and enhanced.

“A zero breast cancer population is impossible, but we can drive down the figures drastically if we keep lifting the awareness creation bar up daily,” she said.

She encouraged the students to be alert and help their relatives at home to engaging in breast screening for lumps, reminding them that all females were at risk.

Ms. Cecilia Appiah, headmistress of Krobo Girls SHS, commended BCI for extending the campaign to the school, and gave the assurance that the school would complement the efforts of BCI by sustaining the campaign in the school and its catchment area.
