Madam Janet Addo, popularly known as “Chop Better”, a “Patients’ Welfare” Campaigner based in Ho, has called for the installation of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras in hospital wards across the country.
She said the installation of such devices is necessary to monitor activities of healthcare service providers and to promote welfare of patients.
Madam Addo, who made the call through the Ghana News Agency, said complaints and stories of alleged negligence and other unprofessional conducts of healthcare service providers, has reached a crescendo necessitating an effective monitoring system.
She said there has been unconfirmed reports of patients dying when placed on oxygen at health facilities and the only way to restore confidence in the healthcare delivery system was monitoring activities at the wards.
Madam Addo said scores of people who died recently at various health facilities in the Regional capital were said to be placed on oxygen adding that “we are not happy burying our relatives every weekend.”
“We don’t know what is happening at the hospitals. Our people go and don’t come back. Now we are afraid of going to the facilities,” she said.
Madam Rejoice Blebu, Administrator at the Volta Regional Hospital, said the Hospital was considering installing CCTV in selected wards and this is part of the facility’s action plan for the year.
