First Lady Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo has called for increased action to augment the gains made in the efforts towards gender equality. She said a sustained action towards seeing women play functional roles at various stages of the governance structure would depict an action oriented effort.
Mrs Akufo-Addo said this when she addressed participants at the Awesome Treasures Leading Ladies Summit held in Accra over the weekend. The event was hosted by Ms Olajumoke Adenowo, Founder of Awesome Treasures Foundation, who doubles as an Outstanding Female African Architect, a VVLEAD Fellow, a Philanthropist, and Juror on Cartier Initiative Awards.
The First Lady said although giant strides had been made in the multi-dimensional struggle for gender parity, a lot still needed to be done. She, however, expressed joy that under the visionary Leadership of President Nana Addo Akufo-Addo, who is a UN Gender Champion as recognised by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Ghana now has 27 percent of women in Ministerial positions.
“Today in Ghana, Women hold key positions such as Chief of Staff, Chief Justice and Secretary to Cabinet, she noted, adding, “I am therefore glad that Awesome Treasures Foundation is in the business of developing leaders through the message of the gospel”.
Appreciating the efforts of the Awesome Treasures Foundation, Mrs. Akufo-Addo said it was very essential that men and women of faith would engage in a free exchange of ideas, on how best to advance the cause of women on the continent.
“As we are all aware, the bonds of sisterhood are critical to our collective agenda to promote the causes of women. “It is the African way to rely on the bonds of sisterhood. I dare say this is one reason why Awesome Treasures Foundation has been so successful for eighteen years,” the First Lady stated.
She charged participants to exert their positions as mothers within the communities and as leaders in every sector of the corporate and national life, and also rise to support each other. “Through this we may together achieve the peace and prosperity, we desire for our nations”, Mrs Akufo-Addo stated.
Among the participants that attended the event were Ms Josephine Nkrumah, the hairperson of the National Commission for Civic Education, Mrs Charlotte Osei, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Ghana and Ms Claudia Lumor of Glitz Africa Magazine.
