The Catholic Standard Awards started in 2001 when a former Nuncio, Most Rev. George Kocherry presented the Trophy to the Management which was named “The Nuncio’s Trophy”.
The trophy is competed for by Subscribers throughout the country. The Nuncio, has, besides the introduction of the Trophy, assumed leadership in prompting the Weekly throughout his visits to Dioceses in Ghana.
St. Margaret Mary Parish, Dansoman, became the first to win the Trophy and continued to win it for three years without a break. The Parish, therefore, became the proud winner of this Trophy for keeps in the year 2005. Surprisingly, Dansoman withdrew from the competition, saying it wanted to give chance to other competitors.
The Nuncio wanting to remain the sponsor of this competition introduced another Trophy in other to maintain the title Nuncio’s Trophy Award Scheme. The winner in each year is determined by the highest weekly subscription by any one particular Parish.
As soon as St. Margaret Mary Parish withdrew from the competition, Churches in Tema-Battor Deanery began struggling to win the trophy.
In 2006, St. Joseph the Worker, Community Eight won the coveted Trophy. Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Sakumono captured the Trophy for two years running, 2007 and 2008.
Tema Community Two Good Shepherd won in 2009 and for the first time Christ the King Parish won the Trophy in 2011 and 2013 during the 75th Anniversary of The Catholic Standard.
