Mrs Freda Prempeh, the Deputy Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, over the weekend called on nursing mothers to immunize their babies to protect them from psychological and physical disabilities.
She enjoined pregnant women to attend regular antenatal clinic to protect themselves and the lives of their unborn babies.
Mrs Prempeh, who is the Member of Parliament for Tano North Constituency in the Ahafo Region, said this when executives of the SWEB Foundation, a disability network focused Non-Governmental Organisation paid a courtesy call on her in Accra.
The executives were at her office to introduce themselves and the core objectives of the foundation to the Deputy Minister.
Mrs Prempeh said parents would do great disservice to their children and live to regret if their actions or inactions contribute to the disability of their children.
She said disability was not inability, thus the need for parents and care takers to help unearth and nurture talents, abilities and capabilities of people with disabilities to enable them to become national assets.
She affirmed the determination of her Ministry to promote the rights, wellbeing and all inclusive development of people with disabilities, and admonished parents to refrain from hiding their disabled wards in homes.
Instead, parents must ensure that their children with disabilities go to school, as government promotes access to quality education among all Ghanaian children.
The Deputy Minister called on Ministries, Departments and Agencies as well as all public institutions to create friendly environment for people with disabilities to access their rights and privileges.
Mrs Prempeh said the SWEB foundation is pursuing a good course and advised the executives to remain focused in order to achieve their objectives and vision.
