Imagine a world where people are silenced and ignored. The mere thought of it sparks many negative ideas. To avoid such a situation, many organizations are working to promote the right to freedom of expression. One of them is Article 19, a non-governmental organization that works for a world where all people can freely express themselves and actively engage in public life without fear of discrimination.
Article 19 was founded in 1987. Its headquarters are based in the UK with nine regional hubs around the world. The NGO is focused on two interlocking freedoms: the Freedom to Speak, and the Freedom to Know. Article 19 believes that people should be allowed to enjoy these freedoms, as a fundamental human right that is central to the protection of other rights. For this reason, when either of these freedoms comes under threat, the organization then provides a voice to the voiceless.
Article 19 campaigns to ensure that all people, especially those who face discrimination, feel empowered to use their right to protest. It calls on the police, the media, and on policymakers to end police brutality at protests, humanise protestors, and reform laws to make protests safer for everyone. According to the organization, such brutality negatively affects those who face it. It records that groups that suffer the most include women, indigenous people, racial, ethnic, or religious minorities. For such groups, the organization may adopt a collective action to make themselves heard.
Over the years, Article 19 has been working wherever freedom of expression is threatened. Its work includes monitoring, research, publishing, advocacy, campaigning, and litigation. Specifically, the NGO advises on the development of legislation to protect freedom of expression and freedom of information in countries emerging from conflict, war, and genocide. It campaigns to safeguard pluralism, independence, and diversity of views in the media. Article 19 also advocates for freedom of information legislation to ensure transparency and to strengthen citizens' participation.
Article 19 envisages a world where people are free to speak their opinions, participate in decision-making and make informed choices about their lives.
