The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has urged churches of the country to help break cultural and
traditional barriers which prevent girls from taking football as a career.
Zambia Daily Mail Friday quoted FAZ president Teddy Mulonga as saying in Lusaka Thursday that the taboos associated with the girl soccer players are hindering the association's efforts of raising the standards of women's football.
He said the churches have enormous potential to contribute to women football development and are well-placed to help the association break such barriers.
"We need to have as many young girls as possible involved in women football for us to have strong national teams and also for the sport to develop," he said.
Female players who are already in this sport should be encouraged to continue so that Zambia can reach the levels of strong teams like Norway, Mulonga said.
