A non-governmental organisation, M-LOCK Foundation, brought smiles to the faces of 487 widows when it organised a special event to celebrate them.
The event, which took place in Accra last Saturday, saw the widows drawn from churches and widows’ associations in Accra being offered free health screening, food, drink and a variety of gifts.
The event also featured a live band performance and an appearance by an award-winning musician, Fameye.
Each beneficiary also received cash support to boost their livelihood, along with food items and electrical appliances.
The initiative formed part of activities marking the birthday of the foundation’s President, Michael Danquah.
Mr Danquah explained that he chose to celebrate his birthday by giving back to the community rather than focusing on personal festivities.
“Today is a special day, not because it’s my birthday but because it gives us the opportunity to come together in service, compassion and love. We are here to say we see you, we value you, and we stand with you,” he said.
Mr Danquah said the foundation’s mission extended beyond one-off charitable acts, as there was ongoing support for widows, orphans and struggling families.
He also mentioned the payment of school fees for students from disadvantaged backgrounds as part of its broader aim to give people hope and make the less privileged feel part of society.
While commending government efforts to establish institutions for vulnerable groups such as the deaf and blind, Mr Danquah called for greater attention to their welfare and upkeep.
He also urged individuals and organisations to support the less fortunate in their communities.
“If you have two things, give one to someone who needs it. People are suffering, and we can all play a part in giving them light in their darkness,” he said.
The Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo, commended the foundation for its initiative to empower widows.
He encouraged the founder to sustain his philanthropic works, noting that such acts touch the hearts and inspire communities.
Mr Dumelo gave an assurance that the government, for its part, would continue to roll out initiatives to improve livelihoods.
