Internal Auditors in the five regions of the north have undergone a two-day training to deepen skills and enhance their work.
They were drawn from Heads of Internal Audit Units from various institutions, including Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs), Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), and tertiary institutions
Organised by the Internal Audit Agency, in collaboration with the European Union, the participants were from the Northern, Upper East, Upper West, Savannah, and North East regions.
The Northern Regional Minister, Mr Ali Adolf John Mburudiba, speaking at the opening of the workshop here in Tamale on Wednesday, said the workshop was a testament to the commitment of the Internal Audit Agency and the European Union to strengthening accountability and governance structures in Ghana’s public institutions.
He said the knowledge the participants acquired at the training would go a long way to ensure that they work to achieve the goals of the Internal Audit Agency in their various departments.
The Minister stated that the crucial role of internal auditors in promoting fiscal discipline, transparency, and value for money in public expenditure of various departments across the country could never be underestimated
Mr Mburudiba said the relevance of the chosen topics for the training, including IPSAS/IFRS, Quality Assurance and Improvement Programme (QAIP), and Global Internal Audit Standards (GIAS) was a laudable one.
“These frameworks are essential for good financial reporting, effective risk management, and institutional accountability,” he emphasised.
He said it was time to strengthen the capacities of internal auditors across public institutions, particularly the MMDAs, MDAs, SOEs, and tertiary institutions to achieve sustainable development, efficient resource use, and national policy goals.
He assured the participants of the government’s commitment to empowering internal audit as a vital pillar of public financial management reform.
Mr Mburudiba added that government would continue to work with the Internal Audit Agency (IAA) and development partners to ensure auditors were equipped, supported, and given the independence required to perform their duties effectively across their institutions in the country.
Mr Mburudiba commended the IAA for promoting professional excellence and creating a platform for knowledge-sharing and also applauded the European Union for their support to Ghana to build stronger systems for accountability and good governance.
Mr Patrick Vug Nanke, the Head of Audit and Investigations of the IAA, expressed the hope that the training would deepen the knowledge of the officers and enhance accountability at various government departments across the country.
