The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has urged Ghanaians to make it a habit of wearing African clothing daily as part of efforts to promote local heritage and keep economic value within the country.
Speaking in an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Face to Face on Tuesday, February 24, Madam Gomashie said wearing African attire every day supports cultural identity and economic development.
“Wear your African clothes every day. That is what keeps the money in the country. We’re not just promoting tourism for people to just come and see and go. By promoting tourism, we’re promoting heritage. There’s a tangible part, and there’s an intangible part, and all of it together makes tourism thrive. You shouldn’t wait for me to tell you or suggest to you to wear ‘fugu’ on Wednesday; you should decide that every day you are going to wear a print that identifies us,” she said.
She explained that the introduction of Wednesday as a ‘fugu’ day was a deliberate initiative to promote traditional attire, adding that midweek was chosen to give the campaign a structured and memorable focus.
“To be deliberate about promoting ‘fugu’, we had to give it a day. And mid-week, I thought that it just looked and sounded right. To make it a mid-week wear,” she noted.
Madam Gomashie also commended the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, for encouraging the use of African attire in Parliament, describing it as a positive step in promoting Ghanaian culture and identity.
