Workers under the government payroll have been asked to start processing their documents for at least six months ahead before proceeding on retirement.
Mr. Christian Tetteh Sottie, Controller and Accountant General, said this would help facilitate pension processes devoid of delays and queries.
He was addressing a forum of members of Brong-Ahafo Regional branch of Ghana Government Pensioners Association on Friday.
The Controller and Accountant General's Department organized the forum to interact with pensioners to improve service delivery and provide an avenue for the department to explain its operations.
Mr. Sottie said pensions formed a crucial part of the activities of the department.
"It is such a sensitive area that government is interested in seeing transformation in its processes to make it less stressful for our gallant public servants who have successfully served the nation".
He said 80 percent of the work involving pension processing was performed by the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and 20 percent at the Department.
The Controller and Accountant General said the MDAs were expected to submit files to the Department three months before officers retired and expressed regret that some files were submitted months and even years after the retirement of officers.
"Some files submitted do not contain all information required for the processing of gratuities and pensions."
On the Ghana Health Salary Structure, he said the Department was awaiting approval from the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning to implement the health workers salary structure for 2006 and 2007 due to the budgetary implications for pensions.
Mr. Sottie said the Controller and Accountant General's Department had set up a pension committee to resolve some of the grey issues involving pension payment and had also engaged Information Technology experts to automate the file tracking system at the pension section.
Mr. Sottie advised the pensioners to exercise restraint whilst the Department worked hard to improve service delivery.
