Australian government rejected a research on Friday, which shows its economic stimulus package will not save jobs unless Australia's immigration intake is cut.
"If we do not keep the immigration scheme robust our economic growth potential will be much reduced," Australian Industry Group (Ai Group) chief executive Heather Ridout told ABC Television on Friday.
The government will be very careful about decreasing immigration numbers because employers were committed to current intake, Ridout said. Hopefully, Australian government still expedite the immigration of people who have the skills that they need.
In a paper released on Friday, demographic experts has warned that new permanent and temporary migrant workers will soak up the 90,000 jobs the package is supposed to support.
To maintain efficiency of the economic package, some experts recommended cutting skilled intake to between 40,000 to 50,000 from the projected 133,500, and requiring employers who want to import staff to prove that local skills are not available.
