Reverend Father Peter Akosah-Twumasi, Kumawu Parish Priest of the Catholic Church, has stressed the need for women to develop interest and participate fully in the decision making process of the various Assemblies, to ensure the development of the country.
He said "gone were the days when women were relegated to the background as only housewives", adding that, it was about time they play crucial roles towards the accelerated growth of the country.
Rev. Akosah-Twumasi was addressing the opening of a three day Civic Education Workshop organized by the Christian Mothers Association (CMA), Ghana, for 50 voluntary organizers of the Association at Ejisu in the Ashanti Region on Thursday.
The Workshop, sponsored by the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung of Germany, was under the theme "Towards 2010 District Assembly Elections: Pushing the Agenda for Increased Women Participation".
He said decision making process at the grassroots was very essential component of the decentralization policy of the Assemblies and charged the participants to sensitize women in their areas to take up the positions as assemblywomen.
Rev. Akosah-Twumasi, who was speaking on the topic "Active Politics, the Role of the Christian Women", urged Christian women to play meaningful contributions in both the church and the state.
Mrs. Juliana Danquah, Former CMA Organizer of the Kumasi Archdiocese, speaking on the topic "Duties of CMA Voluntary Organizers", advised the participants to assist in the collection of tithes and other activities to enhance the programmes of the Catholic Church.
She advised members of the CMA and the public to be law-abiding and to honour their tax obligations, to help raise revenue towards the developmental of the nation.
Ms. Augustina Boakye, immediate past- President of CMA Ghana, urged the organizers to educate their members on the need to attend meetings regularly to enable them to deliberate on issues, which would promote their welfare.
Mrs. Elizabeth Addai Boateng, Executive Secretary of the Association, commended the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung of Germany for its support in training the women, which had helped increase women participation in the Assemblies throughout in the country.
