The National Chairman of the District Directors of Health Services (DDHS) group, Dr Yaw Ofori Yeboah on Monday expressed concern about the non- performance of some health-related non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
Speaking at the 17th Annual DDHS group meeting in Cape Coast, on the theme: "improving health delivery amidst dwindling resources: a challenge for the District Director of Health Services," he said for Ghana to meet the Millennium Challenge Goals, there was the need to engage the services of NGOs.
Dr Yeboah explained that unfortunately such organisations with fanciful names only exist on paper and do not sponsor or support the Ghana Health Service (GHS).
He said some of the NGOs, which have been registered under the GHS, to provide support for health organisations were rather sponsoring beauty pageants.
Dr Yeboah observed that it is the GHS that provides the health care needs of these beauty queens, hence the need for the support they receive to be channelled to the service.
He expressed the need for NGOs that are not living up to expectation to be exposed, while the genuine ones should be awarded contracts.
Dr Yeboah advised health personnel not to allow challenges they face in the performance of their duties to discourage them, but should rather endeavour to judiciously utilize the little resource at their disposal.
