The Upper East Regional Directorate of Ghana Health Service (GHS) has trained 29 laboratory technicians to assist in health service delivery in the Region.
The trainees who were mainly drawn from the Health Extension Workers of the National Youth Employment Programme attached to the Health Directorate in the Region underwent two months' training in basic laboratory procedure.
They studied basic microscopy, infectious disease prevention, malaria and HIV/AIDS, urine and stool examination and estimation of haemoglobin.
The Regional Director of Health Service, Dr Koku Awoonor-Williams said the trainees would augment health personnel in the region.
He explained that about 80 percent of health facilities in the Region did not have adequate number of laboratory technicians, a situation, he said was affecting health delivery in the region.
He stressed the need for them to help build the image of the Ghana Health Service by attending to clients in a more positive manner.
The Deputy Regional Public Health Director, Mr. James Akpablie appealed to experienced laboratory technicians to be supportive and supervise the trainees to help them discharge their duties.
