Mr. Abu Kansambata, the District Chief Executive for Nadowli, has appealed to chiefs to complement the work of district assemblies by ensuring peace to enhance development.
He said ensuring peace was a task for all and all must work towards achieving it because without it no meaningful development could be implemented.
Mr. Kansambata was addressing traditional rulers, opinion leaders, assembly members, youth and authorities of decentralised agencies and institutions in the district at a peace durbar held at Nadowli on Thursday.
The Youth Network for Human Rights and Democracy, a non-governmental organisation, in collaboration with the German Development Services (DED), organised the event on the theme: "Dialogue- key to peace and development."
It was aimed at building the capacity of people on peace, good governance and conflict prevention.
Mr. Kansambata appealed to chiefs not to see the development aspect of the communities as a duty for district assemblies alone but to help mobilise their people to undertake self-help development projects.
"One thing chiefs must know is that the people in the communities are their people and without them, there cannot be any district assemblies", he said.
"Therefore, the development of the communities and the welfare of the people depended larger on conflict free environment and that must be secured for the people by the two institutions", Mr. Kansambata said.
Mr. Kansambata said government had recognized the importance of chiefs and would always involve them in decision-making so that their views and concerns could be incorporated in the formulation of polices and programmes.
