The Police on Tuesday called for strong community involvement in the fight against crime, especially at the grassroots level.
They said neighbours working together through the concept of the Neighbourhood Watch were an effective way to combat crime in their before it even starts.
Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), Emmanuel Bossoh, Accra-North Divisional Commander of the Ghana Police Service was speaking at the inauguration of various neighbourhood watch groups under the division in Accra.
The function was also used as an opportunity to revive neighbourhood watch associations, which have become dormant as a result of the lack of volunteers and incentives for these volunteers.
CSP Bossoh said despite the few successes that the Police have chalked in the fight against armed robbery they would still need the cooperation of the public to assist them in their work.
He said communities that work together are able to alert each other of a potential crime and as such are capable of teaming up to protect one another's interest.
He said neighbourhood watch committees are able to help both the elderly and children protect themselves against criminal activities.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Florence Arthur, Director, Community Policing, said the concept of neighbourhood watch was essential because it assist the Police to fight crimes in the communities.
She called for continuous collaboration between the people and the Police to help combat crime and all forms of wrong doings in the country.
She also urged residents of communities with neighbourhood watch committees to motivate the volunteers by contributing small tokens for their up keep and to ginger enthusiasm.
