An appeal has been made to the Government to upgrade and expand the infrastructure needed for training of the mentally challenged children at the Garden City Special School at Asokore-Mampong in Kumasi.
The school trains these children in pre-vocational skills in leader works, batik, tie and dye, weaving and functional academic work.
Mr. George Yamoah Manu, the Headmaster, said conditions had deteriorated which was a big disincentive to the staff.
Government's subvention has been slashed to GH¢400 from GH¢3,200. Out of the staff strength of 53 only 10 live in the school and this also makes it difficult to supervise and socialize with the 165 hyperactive children.
He said since the school re-opened in the middle of September, all the day students have stayed out because there is no money to fuel the bus that goes round to pick them daily.
According to the headmaster, the school which was started by private individuals in the 1960s and absorbed by the Government in 1977, produced 10 graduates for the job market, last year.
German philanthropist Klaus Jahn and a Kumasi based-Lebanese businessman, Naja David, used to be their main benefactors.
He called on public spirited individuals, churches and other organizations to help make life a bit comfortable for the challenged
children.
