Action Aid, Ghana, an international non-governmental organisation (NGO) on Monday handed over a rehabilitated two-room counselling facility to the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service in the Brong Ahafo Region.
Presenting the keys of the building to the Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Seth Charles Oteng, Regional Manager of
Action Aid, Ms Christina Amarchey, commended the police for their dedicated service.
She said provision of the facility was in line with the commitment of the NGO to help reduce poverty and injustice among the people, especially
women.
Ms Amarchey said Action Aid was partnering DOVVSU to facilitate the fight against the injustices majority of women face.
She expressed the hope that the counselling facility would encourage more women to report cases relating to domestic violence.
DCP Oteng expressed gratitude to the NGO and gave the assurance that the facility would be well maintained and used for the intended purpose.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Kweku Amoako, Regional Co-ordinator of DOVVSU, said the office faced numerous challenges in its operations such as
access to medical care for abused victims due to the expensive bills involved.
He said lack of office vehicle and inexistence of the domestic violence fund, as stipulated in the domestic violence Act 732 of 2007, were other
problems facing the unit and called for collaborative efforts to reverse the situation.
