Mr. Kabral Blay-Amihere, Chairman of the National Media Commission (NMC) on Tuesday said there was a great challenge ahead on the media landscape but pledged the commitment of the commission to live up
to expectation.
"The commissioners are from all sectors of the society and have the capability as a non-partisan institution to protect the media landscape" he
added.
Addressing a press conference in Accra, Mr. Blay-Amihere thanked past commissioners for "great work done" within the past six years and pledged to
build upon it.
"We shall discharge our duties with the highest interest of promoting free media to ensure that Ghana builds her democracy in a free and fair
manner," Mr. Blay-Amihere said.
Mr. Paul Adu-Gyamfi, the immediate past Chairman of the NMC, who said during his tenure,the commission endeavoured to promote media freedom,
improve the quality of journalism and insulated the state owned media from governmental control.
Mr. Adu-Gyamfi noted that through their efforts, the freedom and independence of the media received a considerable boost with Ghana
consistently performing well on all major international indices when assessing media freedom.
He said the NMC deepened reflections on media standards in Ghana which led to the development of guidelines for political journalism and local
language broadcasting.
Mr. Adu-Gyamfi said a media monitoring centre had been established that systematically monitored media performance, identified deficiencies and
proposed interventions.
