Mrs Emma Ocran, Legal Director of the National Insurance Commission (NIC) on Thursday urged Ghanaians to take insurance policies, particularly life insurance, to assist them when the need arises.
She made the call at a regional workshop on "Insurance and Compensation Fund," organized for vehicle owners and drivers of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) in Bolgatanga.
It was jointly organized by the Regional Road Safety Commission and the GPRTU.
Mrs Ocran said fraudster insurance companies set up to cheat and dupe clients had all been routed and that most of the Insurance Companies in the country were genuine.
Mrs Ocran said the government established the NIC charged with the responsibilities of regulating and monitoring the activities of Insurance
Companies in the country.
She said the genuine insurance companies that were operating in Ghana were supposed to have registered with the NIC and any insurance company that had not registered with it was not genuine.
Mrs Ocran stated that every year the insurance companies were mandated to renew their license and any company found not being straightforward was supposed to be closed down to give way to genuine ones.
She added that the NIC had a Complaint and Settlement Bureau where clients who were not satisfied in dealing with any insurance company were asked to lodge complaints for the necessary assistance.
Mr Isahaku Yakubu, a former Regional Manager of NIC, entreated the vehicle Owners and the drivers to take both the live insurance and that for their vehicles because that could help them a lot.
He said taking insurance policies would enable them to get soft loans as they could be used as collateral security.
Mr Godfred Abulbire, Chairman of the GPRTU in charge of Upper East, thanked the organizers of the programme and entreated the participants to take the various insurances for their own good.
