An Indonesian judge who made joking remarks about rape should be dismissed, the Judicial Commission said Monday.
Daming Sanusi, a candidate for Supreme Court justice, told legislators during a vetting session last week that he did not think rape defendants should be sentenced to death, saying "the rapist and the victim may have enjoyed it."
The comments drew criticism and calls for Sanusi's dismissal, prompting him to make a tearful apology.
"The Judicial Commission has recommended that Daming be dismissed with the right to a pension," deputy chairman Imam Anshori said.
The commission oversees the conduct of judges and proposes candidates for the Supreme Court.
Sanusi is not the first Indonesian official to be lambasted for remarks about rape.
In 2011, Fauzi Bowo, then Jakarta governor, said women should not wear sexy clothing to avoid being raped. The remarks sparked street protests by female activists.
Last year, Education Minister Muhammad Nuh was criticized for suggesting that some women who reported rape had actually engaged in consensual sex.
He made those remarks after a high school near Jakarta expelled a student who had been kidnapped and raped by a friend she met on the social network Facebook.
Nuh later apologized and said his remarks were taken out of context. The school reinstated the student following a public uproar.
