A parade of 1,350 school children and the security agencies, under the command of Captain Jacob Sedro of the First Infantry Battalion (1BN), marked the Eastern Regional celebration of Ghana’s 60th Independence Day celebration, held in Koforidua.
The children thrilled the large crowd with their marching skills – drawing prolonged applause.
The military also put on show some of the equipment in their arsenal – weapons and light tactical vehicles. The Koforidua Market Women Association would not be left out of the excitement and was on hand to add colour to the event with a gymnastic display.
Mr. Eric Kwakye Darfuor, the Regional Minister, read the President’s address, asking all to combine their effort to protect the environment.The schools were rewarded with prizes for their performance in the march past. In the basic schools category, Prince of Peace, came first, with Pentecost, adjudged the first runner up, and Madonna coming third.
New Juaben, took the first position in the senior high school (SHS) category, with Oyoko-Methodist and Oti-Boateng taking the second and third places, respectively. With respect to the school cadets, New Juaben SHS Army Cadet, came first with Pope John SHS Navy Cadet placing second and Oti-Boateng SHS Police Cadet coming third.
Oti-Boateng won the overall best school award.
