Mr. Patrick Alhassan Adama, Member of Parliament for the Sissala West Constituency in the Upper West Region has donated 31 motor bikes to Assembly members in the District to help address their transportation challenges.
Twenty-nine of the Assembly members took one motor bike each costing GHC5, 000.00, while the remaining two were given to the District Health Directorate to enhance their work.
Presenting them to the Assembly members last weekend, the MP said all the 31 motorbikes had been provided with crash helmets and insured for a period of one year. Mr Adama appealed to the Assembly members to ensure they wore their crash helmets each time they rode the bikes and avoid over speeding to protect their lives.
Before the presentation of the motorbikes, the MP handed over five new boreholes he drilled for communities in the district to improve access to potable water. He said he often felt uncomfortable each time he saw women walking long distances to carry water and pledged his commitment to help reverse the situation.
He also pledged to continue to sacrifice his personal resources to complement government’s effort at developing the district and urged all to support him in that regard. The MP also raised concern about the disappearing subsidised fertilizer meant for poor farmers in the district and appealed to all those engaged in such an illegality to stop it for the sake of the development of the district.
Mr Adama said such acts amounted to thwarting the efforts of the government towards empowering the rural poor people in agriculture to ensure food security in the country.Mr Felix Neetege, Presiding Member (PM) of the Sissala West District Assembly thanked the MP on behalf of his colleagues for honouring his promise, adding that the gesture had not only touched the hearts of Assembly members alone but also everyone in the constituency.
He said the challenges Assembly members go through in attending Assembly sittings had now been curtailed by his kind gesture. Mr Mohammed Bakor, the District Chief Executive (DCE) expressed gratitude to the MP for his commitment to help develop the district, saying the motorbikes would now make it easier for Assembly members to attend meetings on time and also monitor activities in their Electoral Areas.
Mr Bakor said handing over of the five boreholes had brought the number of new boreholes drilled by the MP for communities in the district to 26 while over 80 boreholes had also been repaired. The DCE said such a personal effort by the MP would help to complement the efforts of the Assembly and the government in developing the district.
