Madam Anita Desosoo, the Outgoing First Vice-Chair of the New Democratic Congress (NDC) has publicly knelt before the founder of the party, asking for forgiveness on behalf of the party for their wrongdoings against him.
Madam Desosoo, who described Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings as his ‘father’ pleaded for him to pardon ‘his children’ who had gone astray, saying ‘we are sorry, forgive us’
She did that when giving a remark on behalf of the party at the commemoration of the 39th Anniversary of the June 4, 1979 uprising, built on the values of probity, accountability and transparency.
This year’s June 4 anniversary was commemorated at Madina Social Welfare School Park on the theme: “Reorganising towards the core values” and brought together some NDC leaders and loyalists.”
“I know, your children, we have erred…if you are child, you prepare to say I am sorry,” she said while calling on the party members to respect as well as value those who sacrificed for restoring the country.
In a spirit of reconciliation and remorse, she said “On behalf of the party I kneel down before my father,” stressing on the need for the party to come to be united in building the country with the values of the NDC.
Madam Desosoo described the former President as a hero, when she noted that it was in a good faith that she had received the news of an apology for strong words used against Former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and John Dramani Mahama.
She called on party members to respect the sacrifice made for the nation during the June 4 revolution, which led to the demise of a number of Ghanaians in an attempt of the military and some professional bodies to restore sanity in the country.
She used the opportunity to call on the party youth members to remain neutral as there seemed to be few challenges with the party advising them not take sides, but to plead with their elderly to restore peace, adding that “your future is at stake so you have to be very careful”.
Madam Desosoo called on party members to see former President Rawlings and accord him the due respect and urged party members to be truthful to each other saying, “Do not only think about money… Very soon, there will be elections and people will bring money to vote for them. If you take the money and vote for them, you become their slaves.”
She indicated that there were people with the ideals to lead but do not have, saying those are the people who would be willing to serve.Mr Koku Anyidoho, Deputy General Secretary of the NDC called on every NDC member to believe in the ideals of the June 4 uprising because the party was birthed from the revolution, adding “Anyone who believes in NDC but does not believe in June 4 is like believing in God without believing in Christ or believing in Allah without believing in Mohommed.”
In a response, Flt Lt Rawlings said he had never been a factionalist, stating that “Jerry John Rawlings is not a faction and will not be. Love me or hate me, but for our party to survive, the core values of what I stand for have to be respected and embraced- thus, probity, accountability and transparency.”
