The members of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) on Wednesday overwhelmingly endorsed Mr Alfred Asiedu Adjei as the Presiding Member (PM) of the Assembly.
The newly elected PM secured 52 votes, representing 96 per cent of the 54 votes cast by the assembly members present during the polls.
Mr Adjei, 40, is the Assembly Member for Avenor Electoral Area and a social worker with Absolute Community Network, a Non-Governmental Organisation that caters for vulnerable women in deprived communities.
Mr Mohammed Adjei Sowah, the Chief Executive of the AMA, in an address said that there was the need to fill the seat after the former PM, Mr Thomas Mustapha Ashong’s term of office ended some months ago, to facilitate the work of the house.
The election, which was conducted by the officials of the Electoral Commission was done peacefully and the elected PM was immediately sworn into office by Madam Abena Opoku Adjin-Doku, a Circuit Court Judge.
Mr Adjei in his address expressed gratitude to the assembly members for the confidence reposed in him and promised to work hand-in-hand with them to ensure that the AMA Chief Executive’s vision of making Accra a smart, sustainable and resilient city was achieved.
He further promised to work hard towards ensuring that the assembly members were given whatever was due them in time in order to work towards developing their various electoral areas.
