Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan has called on authorities to conduct "a thorough investigation" to establish the cause of a fire that gutted a popular market in Dar es Salaam last night.

Shocked traders gathered at Kariakoo market on Sunday as firefighters put out the fire.

The market - set up in the 1970s - is a one stop shopping centre for people across the country and in neighbouring countries.

Some residents of the city have criticised the city's fire brigade for being slow to respond to the fire despite its headquarters being located close to the market.
