Prof. Michael Kpessa-Whyte, Director General of the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA), has urged Ghanaians to emulate the values of the late Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, by showing compassion to the needy.
Dr. Omane Boamah and seven others lost their lives in the August 6 helicopter crash.
Speaking on Channel One
TV’s The Point of View with Bernard Avle on Monday, August 11, Prof. Kpessa-Whyte described Dr. Omane Boamah as a leader who cared deeply about alleviating the suffering of others.
“I think he would want us to reflect on his values, which include being very compassionate, and he cared deeply about suffering people. He was someone who was deeply caring and compassionate, and if we can find a way to magnify that value and be compassionate to the needs of many people in the country. Whenever his soul and spirit are, he will smile,” he urged.
The crash claimed the lives of eight people, including Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, former parliamentary candidate, Samuel Aboagye, and National Democratic Congress (NDC) Vice Chairman, Samuel Sarpong, and Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator.
The crew members who perished were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
A state funeral for the victims will be held on Friday, August 15, 2025, at the Black Star Square in Accra.
The aircraft departed Accra at 09:12 local time (GMT) and was heading to Obuasi for an anti-illegal mining event. Its disappearance triggered an immediate search-and-rescue operation, which later confirmed that all eight people aboard had died.
