Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has said the government was preparing a new decentralisation policy and strategy aimed at ensuring that power, authority and responsibilities was indeed transfered from the centre to the sub-regional level.
Speaking at the opening of the National Dialogue on Decentralisation and Responsive Governance in Accra on Wednesday [September 25, 2025], the Vice President said the outcomes of the dialogue will guide the government’s decentralisation policy for the next five years and shape the way Ghanaians are governed.
She said the process would also influence how citizens view themselves as a nation.
“I expect that this dialogue will not only enrich the content of the policy, but also help shape the implementation in concrete ways,” she said.
The Vice President added that the government continues to support the Committee and Secretariat coordinating the reforms to deliver on their mandates as prescribed by law.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang said the dialogue provides an opportunity for government, development partners, traditional authorities, civil society, the private sector and citizens to renew their role in building a decentralised governance system that serves all.
She noted that the government was ready to translate the lessons from the dialogue into reforms that will bring practical improvements in service delivery, with a particular focus on efficiency, inclusivity, and accountability.
“Let us envision a Ghana where governance is closer to the people, where institutions are responsive, where citizens are active participants in shaping their paths,” Professor Opoku-Agyemang urged.
She expressed hope that the dialogue would provide the clarity, courage and unity needed to strengthen Ghana’s local governance system.
