Electability, not seniority, should decide next NPP flagbearer

Member of Parliament for Techiman South, Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah, has urged delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to prioritise electability over seniority in choosing the party’s next flagbearer, insisting that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is the most marketable candidate to secure victory in the 2028 general elections.

Speaking during Dr. Bawumia’s final day of his Bono East regional tour in Techiman, he cautioned against political experimentation, stressing that the NPP cannot afford to miss the opportunity to return to power in 2028.

“If we want to experiment, then we can choose someone else — but we cannot afford to miss the opportunity to win in 2028,” he said. “If you take out President Mahama, the next most popular politician in Ghana is Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.”

He noted that the former Vice President has already gained strong national visibility and recognition, pointing to the numerous campaign billboards and name recognition across the country as evidence of his broad appeal.

“Since we began this tour, I have seen at least five billboards of Dr. Bawumia in every town. He is already a well-marketed candidate. Why should we ignore all this, especially when we are in opposition and will face financial constraints?” he asked.

Mr Korsah emphasised that the upcoming NPP flagbearer race should be about who can win power, not who has been in the party the longest.

“The 2028 election is not about longevity but about who can win,” he stated, urging delegates in Techiman North to outperform their counterparts in Techiman South, which gave Dr. Bawumia the highest number of votes in the 2023 primaries.
