The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has praised Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the newly elected flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for his efforts to foster unity within the party.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Point of View with Bernard Avle on Monday, February 16, 2026, Afenyo-Markin described Bawumia’s approach to reconciling party members after the presidential primary as commendable.
“Let’s be honest, the posture of Dr Bawumia, in my view, has been commendable…all of us must understand that we’re one party. In all sincerity, I have seen a certain posture in Bawumia expressing his desire to work with all in the party,” he said.
Afenyo-Markin added that supporters need time to recover and align psychologically after the primaries.
“We need to give ourselves time to heal and align psychologically. It’s for the winner to look at the numbers,” he stated.
Dr. Bawumia has consistently called on party members to forgive one another and unite ahead of the 2028 general elections, following his decisive victory in the NPP presidential primary.
Speaking at the National Thanksgiving Service at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) on Sunday, February 15, 2026, Dr. Bawumia urged party members to let go of grievances from the recent campaign season, emphasising the importance of unity as the NPP prepares for the future.
He appealed to party faithful to set aside the hurt caused by heated campaign exchanges.
