US President Barack Obama on Monday telephoned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to congratulate him on the results of the Israeli election, which saw his party win a plurality
in the Knesset.
"The president indicated that the United States looks forward to working with the next government," White House spokesman Jay Carne said.
"He also reiterated his commitment to the deep and enduring bonds between the United States and Israel, and pledged to work closely with Israel on our shared agenda for peace and security in the Middle East."
The relationship between the leaders has been a rocky one despite public statements of support. Both men have come under criticism from domestic political opponents over their uneasy relationship.
The final results of Tuesday's elections gave the right-wing and religious bloc of parties in the 120-seat Knesset a one-seat majority, according to the Central Election Committee.
